Appraisal Services
Cecilia Dan is an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) of the American Society of Appraisers and provides appraisal services compliant with Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
We are completely objective throughout the appraisal process, providing unbiased and informed valuations for a variety of purposes, including non-cash charitable contribution (artworks donated to museums/institutions), insurance replacement value (the cost of replacing a property with a like or comparable artwork in scenario of damage or loss), estate tax or planning, equitable distribution (divorce or family division of property), and market value (typically used as consultation for disposition via future sale or donation).
Recent appraisal assignments include valuations of museum-quality and monumental works by major modern and contemporary artists, including Amoako Boafo, James Lee Byars, Alexander Calder, Robert Colescott, John Currin, Mary Corse, Noah Davis, Ethel Greene, Keith Haring, Michael Heizer, Alex Israel, Rashid Johnson, William Kentridge, Joan Mitchell, Mark Rothko, Sterling Ruby, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Henry Taylor, James Turrell, Ai Weiwei, Kehinde Wiley, and Jonas Wood.
Our services can include all aspects of the donation process, including vetting possible donee institutions, coordinating transfer of artwork, and preparation of appraisal documents. In 2024, Cecilia Dan Fine Art coordinated donations of artwork to major institutions nationally, including Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento, CA), Denver Museum of Art (Denver, CO), Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (Logan, UT), the Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), ICA Miami (Miami, FL), The Jewish Museum (New York), Lucas Museum of Narrative Art (Los Angeles), Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles), Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (Kansas City, MO), Nevada Museum of Art (Reno, NV), Palm Springs Art Museum (Palm Springs, CA), Peréz Art Museum Miami (Miami, FL), Portland Museum of Art (Portland, OR), Santa Barbara Museum of Art (Santa Barbara, CA), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), among numerous others on behalf of our clients.
Cecilia Dan Fine Art has extensive experience handling large-scale appraisal projects of artist estates and dealer/curator archives, including those of major California-based contemporary artists active since the 1960s, and records donations to the Getty Research Institute (Los Angeles), New York Historic Society (New York), and The Brooklyn Museum (Brooklyn, NY).
For objects not requiring formal appraisals, Cecilia Dan Art can conduct market research and reporting of informal valuations of artworks.
